North Korea says it has carried out a nuclear test.
The state-run Central Korean News Agency reported at noon on Monday that the country had successfully conducted another underground nuclear test.
On October 9th, 2006, North Korea announced that it had carried out its first successful underground nuclear test.
The news agency described the latest test as part of the measures to bolster the country's nuclear deterrent.
It said the test was conducted safely with a new, high level of explosiveness and technology, heightening the power of the country's nuclear weapons.
Earlier, the South Korean presidential office announced that an artificial tremor with a magnitude of 4.5 was detected near Poongkye-ri in North Hamkyong Province, North Korea, at 9:54 AM on Monday.
The presidential office said it is trying to confirm if this was caused by a nuclear blast, and it plans to hold an emergency meeting of the National Security Council on Monday afternoon.
The US Geological Survey says it detected a magnitude 4.7 tremor in North Korea at the same time. It says the jolt occurred about 100 kilometers southwest of Chongjin in the northern part of North Korea with its focus 10 kilometers below ground.

"We feared at any moment that we could be sent to a hard labor camp, and then suddenly we were told we were going to a meeting," a tearful and emotional Ling said at a news conference Wednesday morning in California shortly after arriving by plane with Lee and Clinton.
She spoke minutes after the two women were reunited with their families at Bob Hope Airport in Burbank outside Los Angeles. They had been detained in North Korea since March.
North Korea pardoned Ling, 32, and Lee, 36, after Clinton's brief trip Tuesday to Pyongyang.
"We were taken to a location, and when we walked through the doors, we saw standing before us President Bill Clinton," Ling said, with Lee standing beside her.
"We were shocked, but we knew instantly in our hearts that the nightmare of our lives was finally coming to an end." ----
