A vehicle bomb exploded just outside the police rescue offices, destroying the office, damaging nearby buildings and injuring people, deputy commissioner of Lahore, Sajjad Bhutta, told reporters.
There has been no claim of responsibility, but the blast comes as the army is battling militants in the Swat region in the northwest of the country in its most concerted action to curb a growing Taliban insurgency.
It was a strong bomb blast. It damaged several buildings and cars and shattered windows, said police spokesman Nayyab Haider.
New reports from Pakistan indicate that at least 35 people have been killed and more than 200 others have been injured in the blast.
The count is expected to rise, as at least 300 people were believed to have been in the police station at the time of the blast.

According to early reports thirty persons were killed and dozens were injured in a suicide attack outside the Rescue 15 building at Lahores Mall Road near the GPO Chowk on Saturday.
Around 90 persons were admitted at various hospitals of Lahore including the Gangaram Hospital.
The buildings of Rescue 15 and adjacent CCPO office were collapsed in the attack.
Police have arrested two suspect from the scene of the blast.
Police sources said some 40 persons are on duty in the Rescue 15 building. Rescue teams rushed to the point to start relief work. The area, including offices of security agencies, has been cordoned off by the agencies. The powerful blast was heard even outside the radius of one kilometre
According to reports the building of Rescue 15 was completely razed to ground while a portion of the nearby CCPO Lahore office was also collapsed in the attack.
The rescuers were trying to take out the people trapped under the debris of the collapsed buildings.
The sounds of firing were also heard after the blast, eyewitness said.
Emergency has been declared at all hospitals of Lahore. The forces have cordoned off the area after the blast.
At least 40 vehicles were destroyed in the attack.
According to reports 80 to 90 kilogram explosives were used in the blast.
