Santoor maestro Rahul Sharma's song "Om Mani Padme Hum" comes from his CD "Ladakh - In Search Of Buddha." The song and the CD is a tribute to the unique music of India's Ladakh region of Kashmir, bordering occupied Tibet.
Sharma himself is the son and musical disciple of santoor player Pandit Shivkumar sharma, from a family steeped in the tradition of Indian Classical from Kashmir.
'Om Mani Padme Hum' is the most famous mantra of the bodhistiva of compassion, Avalokiteshvara. The Dalai Lama is said to be an incarnation of Avalokiteshvara, so the mantra is especially revered by his devotees. While the mantra plays throughout the track along with some haunting arrangements that truly belong to world music, santoor makes an arrival too and as expected creates a mesmerizing impact.
