-----
Elections vs. Democracy: Post-Bhutto Pakistan and the International Community with discussant Imran Khan, the World Cup cricketer turned political activist and opponent of military rule in Pakistan. Ali Ahsan, associate officer in the executive office of the U.N. Secretary-General, provides commentary.
With the assassination of Benazir Bhutto at the end of 2007, an already turbulent country in the front lines of many of the international community's most pressing concerns - terrorism, nuclear weapons, development, and democracy - was thrown into even greater political turmoil. Parliamentary elections have been rescheduled to February 18, but will elections signify democratic change? And what are the stakes for the international community? - The Century Foundation

A former cricket legend, Mr. Khan was international cricketer of the year in 1989‐1990 and led Pakistan to a World Cup victory in 1992. Have you ever wondered how Indians and Africans ended up in Guyana, Trinidad, Suriname, Fiji, Mauritius and other parts of the West Indies and the world - over? Were your ancestors brought from Africa or India to work the land? Are your grand parents, great grand parents or great - great grand parents originally from India or Africa? If so, then this is your story. The story of our people who were brought from places such as India and Africa as Indentured - laborers and slaves.
Indian indentureship started because when slavery was abolished the cultivation of sugar cane came to a stand - still. The freed slaves brought in from Africa refused to work the plantations resulting in a large - scale labor void on the colonies in countries such as Guyana, Trinidad, Jamaica, Fiji, Mauritius, Suriname and other parts of the West Indies and the Caribbean.
In order to save their plantations from ruin, British plantation owners wrote to India requesting that "Coolies" be shipped as human cargo to labor on the plantations under a system known as Indian indentureship. Under the system, the British planters lied to the British Parliament that the Indians would be paid for their work and proper housing, schools and hospitals would be provided to them on the colonies. However, when the Indians arrived on the colony, the British planters returned to their wicked ways and the Indians were met with brutal and inhumane treatment.
Now thousands of helpless men, women and children are abandoned to want, that the growth of sugar may not languish in Guyana, Trinidad, Jamaica, Suriname, Fiji, Mauritius and other parts of the West Indies and the Caribbean.
Guiana 1838 the Movie tells this story in great detail. This award winning film by filmmaker Rohit Jagessar tells the story of Indian arrival amidst the abolition of slavery in countries such as Guyana Trinidad, Jamaica, Suriname, The West Indies and the Caribbean during the 19th century.
This film is a must - see by all that shares the story of Slavery and Indian indentureship. As a tribute to our ancestors, their struggles and ultimate triumph, Guiana 1838 is offered to you. Please visit the official website www.guiana1838.com
